Terms of Service

Welcome to Six Lines. By downloading, installing, or using the Six Lines mobile application (“the App”), you agree to these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

Nature of Content

Contemplative Reference Tool

Six Lines is a reference and contemplative practice tool rooted in the I-Ching (易經), an ancient Chinese philosophical text. The App provides:

  • Hexagram texts, translations, and scholarly commentary
  • Chinese almanac (黃曆) reference data
  • Date selection (擇日) guidance based on traditional methods
  • AI-assisted interpretations for personal reflection
  • Original ink brush artwork inspired by classical themes

Not Professional Advice

All content in Six Lines is intended for personal reflection and educational purposes only. Hexagram interpretations, almanac guidance, date recommendations, and AI-generated insights:

  • Do not constitute professional, medical, legal, financial, or psychological advice
  • Should not be relied upon as the sole basis for any decision
  • Are rooted in traditional Chinese philosophy and are presented for contemplative value
  • May vary in interpretation and are inherently subjective

If you need professional guidance, please consult a qualified professional in the relevant field.

AI-Generated Content

Gua Interpretations

The App offers AI-assisted hexagram interpretations (“Gua” feature). These interpretations are generated by large language models and:

  • Are informed by classical I-Ching scholarship but are not direct translations of any single source
  • May contain inaccuracies, creative liberties, or perspectives that differ from traditional interpretations
  • Are generated dynamically and may differ each time, even for the same hexagram and question
  • Should be treated as one perspective among many, not as authoritative

Yao Study Companion

The Yao feature uses Apple’s on-device Foundation Models (available on iOS 26+) for conversational study of hexagram lines. All Yao processing occurs locally on your device. Yao responses are AI-generated and subject to the same limitations as any language model output.

Camera Usage

The App offers an optional hand gesture casting feature that uses your device’s camera and on-device machine learning (MediaPipe) to recognize hand gestures for hexagram casting. When you use this feature:

  • Camera data is processed entirely on your device
  • No images or video are stored, transmitted, or sent to any server
  • Camera access is optional; alternative casting methods (coin toss, yarrow stalk) are always available
  • You can revoke camera permission at any time in iOS Settings

Cost and Donations

Every Feature Is Free

The App has no subscription. Every oracle, reference and study feature — the hexagram reference, the almanac, Date Finder, casting, the Yilin verses, the journal, and the AI consultations — is available to every user at no cost. No feature is withheld pending payment.

The Shared Reading Pool

AI consultations draw on a single pool of readings shared by all users and replenished each month. When the pool is spent, AI consultations pause until it refills; everything that does not require the cloud continues to work. We may change the size of the pool and how often it replenishes.

Collections

Some optional collections, such as The Records, are sold as one-time, non-consumable purchases. A collection is bought once and owned permanently, restores to your other devices, and never expires or renews. Collections are additional material; nothing in the oracle, reference, or study features depends on owning one.

Donations

You may optionally donate to replenish the shared pool. Donations are one-off purchases charged to your Apple ID at confirmation and managed by Apple’s App Store; they do not renew. A donation buys no private allowance, no additional features, and no priority — it adds to the pool that everyone draws from. Refunds are handled by Apple under its own policies. Donating is never required to use the App.

Intellectual Property

The App contains original content created by Six Lines, including:

  • Artwork: 4,096 original ink brush artworks are proprietary to Six Lines
  • Translations and commentary: Original scholarly translations and interpretive commentary
  • Software: The App’s code, design, and user interface

The underlying I-Ching text is an ancient work in the public domain. Our original translations, commentary, artwork, and software are protected by copyright.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • Six Lines is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind
  • We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any content, including AI-generated interpretations, almanac data, or date recommendations
  • We are not liable for any decisions made based on content provided by the App
  • Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for the App in the 12 months preceding any claim

Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App
  • Use the App to generate content for competing services
  • Attempt to circumvent access controls, or to draw on the shared reading pool by automated or abusive means
  • Misrepresent AI-generated content as human-authored scholarly work

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance. We will update the “Last Updated” date and, for material changes, notify users through the App or our website.

Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, without regard to conflict of law principles.
