Yilin Verse
鳴鵠抱子,見虵何咎?室家俱在,不失其所。
The singing swan guards her chick; seeing the snake, what harm? The household is all intact; nothing loses its place.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship as a swan cradles its young. A serpent appears — what harm could it do? The household remains intact; nothing is lost from its proper place. The parent bird's calm in the face of the snake embodies a fellowship so secure that external threats cannot penetrate it. From Fellowship to Duration, the transformation anchors this domestic security in permanence. Thunder and wind reinforce each other in Duration; the noble man stands firm and does not change course. The swan does not abandon its nest at the serpent's approach; the family endures because its members hold their ground. Duration is not rigidity but the steady heartbeat of a household that refuses to scatter.
