Yilin Verse
蚕飢作室,昏多亂纏;緒不可得。
Silkworms, hungry, make their chambers; in the dark they tangle wildly. The thread cannot be found.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder bursts from the earth, but the silkworms are starving as they spin their cocoons. In the dim confusion they tangle their threads beyond recovery — no usable silk can be drawn. The image captures effort expended in desperation: hungry silkworms produce chaotic, unusable fiber. From Enthusiasm to Fellowship, the verse reveals a failed attempt at cooperation. Fellowship's image is heaven joined with fire, calling for people to sort by kind and distinguish clearly. Yet these silkworms work in darkness without nourishment, producing only knots. Enthusiasm without proper sustenance and clarity generates entanglement rather than community — the threads that should bind people together become an impenetrable snarl.
