Yilin Verse
不知何孫,夜來扣門,我慎外寢,兵戎且來。
Not knowing whose descendant; in the night, they come knocking at the gate. I take care to sleep in the outer room; weapons and war draw near.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above wind, Duration's reliable rhythm, breaks into thunder above earth — Enthusiasm's rousing mobilization. In the dead of night an unknown person knocks at the door. The householder wisely sleeps in the outer chamber, staying alert to danger, for armies are approaching. Duration's constancy is tested by sudden irruption: the knock that shatters routine. The unknown visitor at night carries overtones of military threat — soldiers requisitioning, scouts probing. Sleeping outside the inner rooms signals readiness rather than comfort. From Duration to Enthusiasm, the steady domestic order confronts the thunder that shakes the earth into collective action. What endured as private stability must now mobilize, whether one is ready or not.
