Yilin Verse

黃虹之野,賢君在位。榮叚為相,國无災殃。

Over the fields of the yellow rainbow, a worthy lord sits upon the throne. Rongxia serves as minister; the state suffers no calamity.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water drawn up through wood, the well supports wise governance from its depths. A yellow rainbow arches over the fields, and a worthy ruler sits on the throne. Rong Jia serves as minister, and the state suffers no calamity. The 'yellow rainbow' (黃虹) was read as an auspicious omen when it appeared in certain configurations, signaling harmony between heaven and earth. Rong Jia as minister may refer to a capable but lesser-known official whose steady administration kept the state on course. From The Well to Development, wind atop the mountain grows trees gradually. The well's patient sustenance meets Jian's principle of measured, step-by-step progress: good governance, like a tree on a mountain, rises slowly but stands firm against all winds.
