Yilin Verse

良夫孔姬,脅悝登臺。樂季不扶,衛輒走逃。

Liang Fu and Kong Ji forced Kui to mount the terrace. Yue Ji would not aid; Duke Wei Zhe fled in escape.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind over mountain meets thunder with wind: gradual development is overturned by the chaos of Duration. Liang Fu and Kong Ji forced Kui to ascend the tower. Yue Ji failed to support the cause, and Duke Zhe of Wei fled. This alludes to the Wei succession crisis of 480 BC. Prince Kuaikui, aided by his sister Kong Ji (wife of Kong Wenzi) and her paramour Hun Liang Fu, staged a coup against his own son, Duke Chu of Wei (Zhe). Kong Kui was coerced onto the tower to declare legitimacy, while Duke Chu escaped to Lu. From Development to Duration, the image of enduring constancy is shattered: what should have lasted was overthrown by intrigue. Duration demands standing firm, yet here the ruler runs and the state convulses.
