Mobile Application

Core Features - Minimal Data Collection

Six Lines is designed with privacy as a core principle. The app works without requiring personal information:

No required accounts: You can use the core app without registration or login
Minimal usage analytics: We collect anonymous, aggregated usage events (such as onboarding step completions) to improve the app experience — see “Anonymous Usage Analytics” below
No crash reporting: We do not collect crash logs or diagnostic data
No third-party tracking: No advertising networks or analytics services are integrated

Optional Personalization Features

During onboarding or elsewhere in the app, you may choose to engage with optional personalization features. If you do, we may collect:

Reflective responses: Your answers to questions designed to understand your contemplative preferences
Initial readings: Consultation queries and hexagrams you explore during onboarding
Profile indicators: Information about how you prefer to engage with the I-Ching and artwork

This personalization data is:

Completely optional—you may skip personalization entirely
Stored on your device, with optional synced portions stored on our servers
Used only to enhance your experience within the app
Never sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising
Deletable in-app via Delete All Data, which also removes synced data from our servers within 30 days

Optional Sync Features (No Account Required)

Some features use server storage linked to an anonymous device identifier (not an email/name account), including:

Synced reading data: Stored Gua sessions and related interpretation content for continuity across reinstalls/devices
Tutorial state: Learning/reflection progress needed for feature access logic
Notes linked to readings: User-authored notes attached to synced sessions
Security logs: Limited request metadata used for abuse prevention and reliability

Server-side data in these flows is:

Encrypted in transit and at rest
Stored securely on our servers
Never sold or shared with third parties
Never used for advertising or marketing without explicit consent
Deleted from our servers within 30 days when you use the in-app Delete All Data action

Important: Six Lines does not require account registration for core use.

Local Data Storage

Certain preferences are stored locally on your device and never leave your device:

Theme preferences (light/dark mode)
Scroll positions for artworks
Recently viewed hexagrams
Interface customizations

This locally stored data is not transmitted to our servers unless you use optional synced features.

Camera Usage (Hand Gesture Casting)

The App offers an optional hand gesture casting feature that uses your device’s camera:

On-device processing only: Camera data is processed entirely on your device using MediaPipe machine learning
No storage or transmission: No images, video, or camera data are stored, recorded, or sent to any server
Optional feature: Camera access is not required; alternative casting methods (coin toss, yarrow stalk) are always available
Revocable: You can disable camera access at any time in iOS Settings

AI-Assisted Interpretations (Gua)

The App offers AI-assisted hexagram interpretations. When you use this feature:

Data sent to our server: Your question text, hexagram result, and reading context are sent to our server for AI processing
No personal identifiers: Requests use anonymous device identifiers, not personal information
Processing: Interpretations are generated by a large language model and returned to your device
Retention: Server-side interpretation data is subject to the same deletion policy as other synced data (removed within 30 days via in-app Delete All Data)

On-Device AI (Yao Study Companion)

On supported devices (iOS 26+), the Yao feature uses Apple’s on-device Foundation Models for conversational hexagram study. All Yao processing occurs entirely on your device. No data from Yao conversations is sent to our servers or any third party.

Anonymous Usage Analytics

To understand how the app is used and improve the experience, we collect anonymous usage events sent to our own servers (not third-party services). These events include:

Event names: Such as “onboarding step completed” or “reading saved” — general milestones, not detailed navigation
Anonymous device identifier: A random ID not linked to your name, email, or Apple ID
Basic context: App version, device locale, and timestamp

This data is:

Sent to our own servers — no third-party analytics services are involved
Not linked to your identity or personal information
Used solely to improve the app experience
Never sold or shared with third parties

Marketing Website

Minimal Data Collection

Our marketing website collects minimal information necessary for basic functionality:

Server logs: Standard web server logs including IP addresses, browser type, and pages visited
Website analytics: We may use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used (e.g. page views); you can control this via your browser or Google’s tools
No personal information: We do not collect names, email addresses, or other personal data through the website

How We Use Information

Mobile Application

We use collected information only for the following purposes:

Personalization: To tailor hexagram and artwork pairings to your contemplative preferences
Sync and continuity services: To provide optional synced readings, notes, and learning progress across app sessions
App improvement: To understand how features are used and improve the contemplative experience
Communication: To respond to your questions or support requests

We never use your information for advertising, marketing to third parties, or any purpose unrelated to your Six Lines experience.

Marketing Website

Any server log data is used solely for:

Basic website functionality
Security monitoring
Technical troubleshooting

We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties. Your data may only be shared in the following limited circumstances:

Service providers: With trusted infrastructure providers (such as cloud hosting) who help us operate the app, under strict confidentiality agreements

Children’s Privacy

Six Lines is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will promptly delete it. Third-Party Services

Mobile Application

The app does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. Anonymous usage analytics are collected by our own first-party servers as described above.

Marketing Website

Our website may be hosted on third-party platforms (such as Vercel) and we may use Google Analytics to understand site usage. We do not use advertising or other third-party tracking services on the site.

International Users

This Privacy Policy applies to users worldwide. If you use Six Lines from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the app, you consent to such transfers. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place for international data transfers.
