Yilin Verse

東鄰嫁女,為王妃后;莊公築館,以尊王母;歸于京師,季姜悅喜。

The phoenix carriage enters the city; flutes and drums sound together. The people line the road, showering petals in welcome.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace's cosmological harmony finds ritual expression. The original verse describes an eastern neighbor's daughter married as royal consort. Duke Zhuang builds a pavilion to honor the queen mother, and the lady named Ji Jiang returns to the capital in delight. This is a scene of ceremonial marriage elevating a woman into the heart of the state, with proper rites and jubilant reception. From Peace to Enthusiasm, thunder erupts from the earth — the ancient kings made music to honor virtue and offered sacrifice to the Supreme Deity. The transformation shows Peace's quiet communion crystallizing into public celebration, as heaven's blessing is acknowledged through ritual joy.
