Yilin Verse
兩足不獲,難以遠行;疾步不能,後旅失時。
Both feet disabled, unable to travel far; walking with haste is impossible -- the rear party misses its time.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder stirs the earth, but the traveler cannot move. Both feet are injured — walking is impossible, let alone a long journey. Hurrying is out of the question, and the rearguard misses its appointed time. The verse depicts a military or diplomatic party crippled at the outset, unable to keep pace or meet its schedule. From Enthusiasm to Peace, the irony sharpens: Peace represents heaven and earth in perfect exchange, the smoothest of all hexagrams. Yet the enthusiast who cannot walk will never reach that harmonious destination. The transformation suggests that Peace requires the capacity for sustained effort, not just initial excitement — and those who rush without securing their footing arrive nowhere at all.
