Yilin Verse

蔡侯適楚,留連江濱;踰時歷月,思其君后。

The Marquis of Cai journeys to Chu, lingering by the river's edge. Months pass beyond the appointed time; he longs for his lord and consort.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace disrupted by enforced sojourn. The Marquis of Cai visits Chu but is detained along the riverbank, month after month passing without release. He longs for his lord and consort back home. According to the Zuo Zhuan, around 509 BC the Marquis of Cai presented a fine fur coat to the King of Chu, but the powerful minister Zichang coveted his spare coat. When the Marquis refused, Zichang slandered him, and the Chu court detained him for three years. From Peace to Duration, thunder and wind persist without change. The transformation mirrors captivity's essence: an endurance without resolution, where time stretches but circumstances refuse to shift.
