Yilin Verse
求兔得獐,過其所望;歡以相迎,高位夷傷。
Setting snares for rabbits, one catches a river deer, exceeding all expectation. Greeted with delight and welcome; yet high position brings its own harm.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above heaven, Peace delivers an unexpected prize. Seeking a rabbit, one catches a roe deer instead — surpassing all expectation. The bounty is welcomed with joy, but the verse turns dark: the high position brings injury. Windfall fortune elevates one to a dangerous height. The hunter who exceeds his hopes discovers that abundance itself becomes a target. From Peace to Darkening of the Light, brilliance enters the earth and is buried. The transformation traces the full arc: unexpected gain draws attention, the elevated position attracts hostility, and wisdom demands that one conceal one's light rather than celebrate the surplus. Joy at the catch is premature.
