Yilin Verse

坤厚地德,庶物蕃息;平康正直,以綏大福。

Kun's thick earth virtue; all creatures multiply and thrive. Level, peaceful, upright, and straight; it brings great blessings to completion.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth above heaven, Peace fulfills its deepest promise. The thick virtue of Kun — the earth — causes all living things to multiply and flourish. Straightforward, peaceful, and upright: through these qualities, great blessing is secured. The verse directly invokes the Kun trigram's character from the Wenyan commentary: 'direct, square, and great.' This is Peace operating at full capacity — earth's generosity meeting heaven's vitality to produce universal abundance. From Peace to Deliverance, thunder and rain break forth, releasing what was bound. The transformation shows Peace's accumulated virtue naturally dissolving obstacles: when the foundation is genuinely nourishing, liberation follows without force.
