Yilin Verse

溫山松柏,常茂不落;鸞鳳所止,得以歡樂。

On the warm mountain, pine and cypress, ever lush and never falling. Where phoenix and luan alight; there they find joy and delight.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and earth refuse to communicate, yet on a warm mountain pines and cypresses stand perpetually green, never shedding their needles. The luan bird and phoenix alight there, finding lasting joy. From Standstill to Duration, Pi's sealed world meets thunder above wind — the enduring rhythm that never deviates. Heng's image is perseverance in character, 'the gentleman stands firm and does not change direction.' The evergreen pines on the warm mountain embody this perfectly: unchanging through all seasons, they create a sanctuary worthy of the most auspicious birds. When the luan and phoenix choose to perch, they confirm the mountain's virtue. Stagnation is overcome not by dramatic reversal but by steady, verdant constancy that outlasts the ice.
