Yilin Verse
春日載陽,福履齊長;四時不忒,與樂為昌。
Spring sun carries its warmth; blessings and footsteps grow in tandem. The four seasons do not falter; with joy they bring prosperity.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship under spring's warm sun. Blessings and good fortune grow in tandem; the four seasons proceed without error, and all flourishes with joy. The verse is a hymn of seasonal regularity — the cosmic order functioning perfectly, each quarter delivering its proper gifts. From Fellowship to Great Exceeding, the transformation seems paradoxical: perfect harmony leading to excess. Yet the lake submerging the trees in Great Exceeding reminds that even prosperity has a threshold. The noble man stands alone without fear. Spring's promise here is genuine, but the structural pattern warns: what grows without limit eventually tests the ridgepole.
