Yilin Verse
甌脫康居,慕仁入朝;湛露之歡,三爵畢恩;復歸窮廬,以安其居。
Outing, Kangju's border peoples, admiring benevolence, come to pay court. The joy of sweet dew and wine; three goblets fulfill all grace. They return to their humble dwellings to live in peace.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven and fire form Fellowship as distant peoples come to pay tribute. The Outuo frontier lands and the kingdom of Kangju, drawn by benevolent reputation, arrive at court. They are received with the joy of the 'Zhanlu' ode — the Shijing poem celebrating the king's feast for visiting lords — and honored with three ritual goblets of grace. Then they return to their humble dwellings, peacefully settled in their own territory. From Fellowship to the Clinging, the transformation sustains the verse's warmth. Doubled fire in the Clinging, the great man extends illumination to the four directions. The foreign guests come to the light, receive its warmth, and carry it home — a fellowship that radiates outward without demanding permanent attachment.
