Yilin Verse

爭訟相背,和氣不處;陰陽俱否,穀風無子。

Quarreling, turning their backs; harmonious spirit finds no home. Yin and yang are both blocked; the valley wind bears no heir.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and fire form Fellowship, but the bonds have snapped. Litigation and discord drive people apart; harmonious qi cannot settle. Yin and yang are both obstructed — the Shijing ode 'Gufeng' laments a barren marriage, and here the union produces no children. The verse channels the bitterest form of domestic failure: not violence but the slow death of a relationship where warmth has departed. From Fellowship to the Family, the transformation is cruelly ironic. Wind emerging from fire in the Family means that words have substance and actions have constancy. Here, neither condition holds — words are accusations, and the only constancy is mutual estrangement. The family that Fellowship should nourish instead withers from within.
