Yilin Verse

履危不安,心欲東西;步走逐鹿,空無所得。

Treading danger, finding no peace; the heart yearns east and west. Running in pursuit of deer; the chase yields nothing at all.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven and fire form Fellowship, but the ground underfoot is treacherous. Treading on danger, the heart finds no peace, pulled in all directions at once. A man chases a deer at full sprint — east then west, exhausting himself — and catches nothing. The verse captures futile pursuit under duress: the quarry is imaginary, the effort real, and the anxiety corrosive. From Fellowship to Conflict, the transformation reveals how communal purpose curdles into contention. Heaven and water move in opposite directions in Conflict; the gentleman plans carefully at the beginning of every enterprise. Here, no such forethought exists — only desperate running and empty hands.
