Yilin Verse

白鶴衘珠,夜食為明;懷我德音,身受光榮。

A white crane carries a pearl; feeding in the night, it makes its own light. Cherishing our virtuous renown; one personally receives glory.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth holds the mountain low, yet a white crane carries a pearl in its beak, feeding on it at night to create light. The crane — symbol of longevity and hidden virtue, whose cry in the marshes is heard across the wild — here produces its own illumination in darkness. Those who cherish the sound of virtue receive glory upon their person. From Modesty to Peace, earth above heaven allows cosmic forces to mingle freely. The white crane's self-generating luminescence embodies this: inner virtue does not wait for external light but produces its own radiance. Modesty, far from dimming one's brilliance, transforms it into the steady glow that draws heaven and earth into harmonious exchange, the very definition of Tai's cosmic peace.
