Yilin Verse

晨風文翰,隨時就溫;雄雌相和,不憂危殆。

Morning wind, patterned plumage, following the warmth with the season; male and female in harmony, free from worry and danger.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder stirs the earth, and a dawn hawk with patterned plumage follows the warmth of the season. Male and female call in harmony, free from danger or distress. The 'morning wind' (晨風) is a kestrel or sparrowhawk from the Shijing, associated with longing and seasonal movement. Here it appears in its ideal state: beautiful, paired, warm, and safe. From Enthusiasm to Influence, the transformation is natural. The lake rests atop the mountain, and the gentleman empties himself to receive others. The harmonious pair of birds embodies mutual attraction — Influence's essence — where neither dominates but both respond to each other's call. Enthusiasm channeled into genuine responsiveness creates paired contentment.
