Yilin Verse
鵲巢柳樹,鳩集其處;任力薄德,天命不佑。
The magpie builds a nest in the willow; the cuckoo takes its place. Relying on force, lacking virtue -- heaven mandate does not bless.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder erupts from the earth, but a magpie builds its nest in a willow tree only to have a dove move in. This echoes the Shijing ode 'Que Chao' — 'The magpie's nest, the dove dwells in it' — a metaphor for usurpation. One creature labors while another claims the result. The verse adds a moral judgment: relying on force while lacking virtue brings no heavenly support. From Enthusiasm to Progress, the transformation exposes a fraud. Progress shows fire rising above the earth, a marquis receiving gifts of horses in broad daylight — legitimate advancement through recognized merit. The dove who occupies the magpie's nest has progressed without earning it, and heaven's mandate will not sustain what force alone has seized.
