Yilin Verse

夫婦相背,和氣弗處;陰陽俱否,莊姜無子。

Husband and wife turn their backs; harmonious spirit departs. Yin and yang both blocked -- Lady Zhuang Jiang bears no child.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder rises from the earth, but husband and wife turn their backs on each other and the harmonizing breath departs. Yin and yang both enter standstill — and Lady Zhuang Jiang of Wei bears no children. Zhuang Jiang, celebrated in the Shijing ode 'Shuo Ren' as the most beautiful woman of her age, married Duke Zhuang of Wei yet remained childless. The Zuo Zhuan records: 'She was beautiful but had no sons.' The duke's affection turned to concubines, and the household fractured. From Enthusiasm to The Family, the verse is devastatingly ironic: The Family's image is wind from fire, words with substance and actions with constancy. Yet here the family's foundation — the marital bond — is broken at its core, and no amount of enthusiasm can produce what mutual estrangement has foreclosed.
