Yilin Verse
商風召寇。呼我北盜。間諜內應,與我爭鬭。殫已寶藏,主人不勝。
Autumn wind summons raiders, calling in northern bandits. Spies respond from within, contesting with us in battle. Our treasures are spent -- the host does not prevail.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder erupts from the earth, but autumn winds summon raiders from the north. Spies have planted agents inside; the enemy fights from within as well as without. Treasuries are exhausted, and the master of the house cannot prevail. The verse depicts a coordinated assault: external invasion synchronized with internal subversion, the worst nightmare of any ruler. The 'autumn wind' (商風) carries the killing energy of the western Metal phase, associated with warfare and punishment. From Enthusiasm to Revolution, the transformation is harrowing. Fire burns within the lake — the old order is overthrown. Revolution demands that the time be ripe and the cause just, but here the revolution is inflicted by enemies, not chosen by the ruler. Enthusiasm that fails to guard against infiltration is revolutionized from outside.
