Yilin Verse

眾兔俱走,熊羆在後;踦不能進,失信寡處。

The herd of rabbits all run; bears and grizzlies follow behind. Limping, unable to advance -- trust is lost, and one dwells alone.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder stirs the earth, but a herd of rabbits scatters in all directions with bears lumbering behind. One stumbles, unable to advance, losing credibility and ending up alone. The image is a failed hunt: the quarry bolts in every direction while the heavy bears cannot keep pace, and one pursuer trips and falls behind. From Enthusiasm to Development, the contrast is pointed. Development shows wind above the mountain — the wild goose gradually advancing through proper stages, the gentleman dwelling in worthy virtue. The verse's stumbling pursuer has abandoned gradual progress for reckless chase, tripping over haste. Enthusiasm that lunges after every fleeing target misses them all, while Development insists that steady, stage-by-stage approach is the only path that holds.
