Yilin Verse
登階上堂,見吾父兄;左酒右漿,與福相迎。
Ascending the stairs, entering the hall, I see my father and brothers; wine on the left, broth on the right -- we welcome blessings together.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder erupts from the earth as one climbs the steps and enters the ancestral hall. There stand father and elder brothers — wine at the left hand, broth at the right — welcoming the returned family member into blessing. The verse radiates homecoming: the ritualized ascent of steps, the formal greeting of elders, the symmetrical placement of offerings signaling proper ceremony and familial warmth. From Enthusiasm to The Gentle, the transformation softens the thunder into wind. Doubled wind penetrates gently and thoroughly, as the ruler repeats and refines his commands. The enthusiast's return to family does not crash through the door but enters through measured steps, ascending gradually into the presence of ancestors — the gentle permeation of blessing received through proper form.
