Yilin Verse

梁柱堅固,子孫蕃盛;福喜盈積,終無禍悔。

Beams and pillars stand firm; descendants flourish and multiply. Joy and blessings abound -- in the end, no disaster or regret.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder rests within the lake, and the household's pillars and beams stand firm. When the structural frame holds, descendants flourish and multiply; blessings and joy accumulate without end, and no calamity or regret intrudes. The verse is pure domestic auspice — the strong ridgepole as metaphor for a family lineage supported by sound foundations. Unlike the sagging ridgepole of Great Exceeding, here the beam bears its load with ease. From Following to Enthusiasm, thunder breaks from the earth in Yü, the ancient kings' music resounding to heaven. The solid house of Sui becomes the festive hall of Yü: structural integrity generates the confidence from which celebration naturally erupts.
