Yilin Verse
伯氏殺羊,行悖天時;亳社夷燒,朝歌丘墟。
The elder brother slaughtered the sheep, acting against heaven timing. The Bo shrine was burnt and razed; Zhaoge became a ruin.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath the mountain breeds ritual violations, and the transformation ascends to heaven joined with fire — the Fellowship of kindred spirits. 'The elder kills sheep against heaven's timing' — sacrificial animals slaughtered out of season violate the cosmic order. The Bo shrine is razed and burned; Zhaoge becomes a ruin. The Bo shrine (亳社) was the ancestral altar of the Shang dynasty; Zhaoge was its last capital where King Zhou of Shang met his end. The verse traces dynastic collapse from ritual transgression to military destruction. From Work on the Decayed to Fellowship, the message turns hopeful: after the old corrupt order burns away, genuine fellowship can form. Fire rising to heaven illuminates who truly belongs together.
