Yilin Verse
倉盈庾億,宜種黍稷。年豐歲熟,民得安息。
Granaries brim, storehouses overflow; fit for planting millet and grain. Year after year, harvest ripens; the people find rest.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth upon earth transforms into thunder above wind — Duration. Granaries overflow with hundreds of millions of measures; one should plant millet and grain. The year is bountiful, the harvest ripe, and the people rest in peace. Thunder and wind, the image of Heng, show the union of the eldest son and eldest daughter — sustained effort without change of direction. The verse depicts agricultural constancy: full storehouses, timely planting, reliable harvests, and popular contentment. From the Receptive to Duration, the earth's seasonal productivity becomes an enduring pattern. Heng's gentleman stands without changing his course, just as the farmer follows the unchanging rhythm of sowing and reaping. Prosperity is not a single windfall but the accumulated result of seasons faithfully observed.
