Yilin Verse
鴻鵠高飛,鳴求其雌。雌來在戶,雄哺嘻嘻。甚獨勞苦,炰鱉膾鯉。
The swan goose flies high, calling for its mate. The female comes to the door; the male feeds her, cooing with delight. So greatly does he toil alone; stewing turtle and slicing carp.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire beneath the mountain warms a domestic scene. A wild swan flies high, calling for its mate. The female arrives at the doorway; the male feeds her, clucking with delight. Though the labor is solitary and exhausting, the reward comes as a feast of braised turtle and sliced carp — luxury foods signaling celebration. The verse moves from yearning to reunion to nourishment: a complete arc of longing fulfilled. From Grace to Nourishment, fire beneath the mountain transforms into thunder beneath the mountain. Where Grace adorns the exterior, Nourishment addresses what truly sustains. The swan's patient calling and devoted feeding embody Yi's core teaching: what and how we nourish determines whether we thrive.
