Yilin Verse
山東山西,各自言安。雖相登望,意未同堂。
East of the mountain, west of the mountain; each proclaims its own peace. Though they climb and gaze toward one another, their thoughts have not yet shared the same hall.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire beneath the mountain separates two views. East of the mountain and west of the mountain, each side claims it is at peace. Though they climb and gaze at each other, their hearts never share the same hall. The mountain itself becomes the barrier: what should connect (fire illuminating both slopes) instead divides. Two households or two factions can see each other but cannot unite. From Grace to the Family, the mountain's fire transforms into wind emerging from fire. The Family hexagram demands that words have substance and actions have constancy. This verse diagnoses the problem the Family must solve: proximity without genuine communion. Only when wind carries fire's warmth beyond the mountain can separate camps become one household.
