Yilin Verse

鳧遇稻廬,甘樂趨鰌。雖驅不去。

The wild duck finds a rice field, delighting in the loach below. Though driven away, it will not leave.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire beneath the mountain warms an irresistible feast. A wild duck finds a rice storehouse and delightedly chases loaches — though you drive it away, it refuses to leave. The scene is comically vivid: the duck has found paradise and no amount of shooing will dislodge it. This is appetite finding its perfect object, instinct so satisfied that external force cannot override it. From Grace to the Arousing, fire beneath the mountain gives way to doubled thunder. The Arousing brings shock and sudden movement — yet the duck's stubborn immobility is the verse's central joke. Against Thunder's rattling force, the creature that has found abundance simply hunkers down. Sometimes the most powerful arousal is not being moved at all.
