Yilin Verse

虎豹熊羆,遊戲山隅。得其所欲,君子無憂。旅人失利,市空無人。

Tigers, leopards, and bears roam and sport in the mountain's corner. They obtain what they desire; the noble man has no worry. Travelers lose their profit; the market stands empty, without a soul.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven stored within the mountain opens onto a scene of wild beasts at play. Tigers, leopards, and bears roam the mountain corners, sporting in their natural domain. The gentleman, encountering them in their own habitat, finds no cause for worry — each creature has what it desires. But for travelers the outlook darkens: the road is cut off, the marketplace stands empty. Mountain above water, the image of Youthful Folly, suggests the young fool who wanders into territory beyond his understanding. From Great Taming to Youthful Folly, the transformation warns that accumulated mountain strength may shelter native creatures while blocking outsiders. What nourishes the insider imperils the stranger who does not know the terrain.
