Yilin Verse
長女三嫁,進退多態。牝狐作妖,夜行離憂。
The eldest daughter marries thrice; advancing and retreating, many shifts. A vixen works mischief; traveling by night, she parts from sorrow.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Mountain over thunder, the discerning jaws, gives way to heaven and fire — Fellowship. The eldest daughter marries three times, advancing and retreating in many guises. A female fox works mischief, prowling by night and breeding sorrow. The eldest daughter's serial marriages suggest instability at the heart of domestic order, while the fox-spirit — a classical figure of seductive deception — compounds the disruption. From Nourishment to Fellowship, the transformation is ironic: fellowship requires trust and constancy, yet this verse shows bonds repeatedly formed and broken. Where nourishment should build lasting community, the fox's shapeshifting sabotages every connection, turning the fire of fellowship into a night-wanderer's anxiety.
