Yilin Verse
墻高蔽日,崑崙翳月,遠行無明,不見懽叔。
The wall rises high, blocking the sun; Kunlun eclipses the moon. Traveling far without light, one cannot see the beloved uncle.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water upon water, vision is blocked at every scale. A wall so high it obscures the sun, Kunlun itself veiling the moon — from the domestic to the cosmic, light cannot penetrate. Traveling far without illumination, one cannot find the beloved uncle (懽叔). The verse layers obstruction: architectural, geographical, celestial. Even Kunlun, the axis of the world and gateway to immortality, becomes an instrument of darkness here. From The Abysmal to Enthusiasm, the transformation promises thunder bursting from the earth — spontaneous, irresistible energy. But the verse captures the moment before that release, when every source of light is walled off and the longed-for reunion remains impossible.
