Trigram Changes
Yilin Verse
東風解凍,和氣兆升,年歲豐登。
The east wind thaws the ice; warm breath stirs and rises. The harvest year is rich and bountiful.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Doubled fire meets thunder and wind in enduring union: brilliance warms into lasting fertility. The east wind thaws the frozen earth, harmonious energy rises in response, and the harvest year brings abundance. The verse is pure seasonal imagery: the east wind of spring dissolves winter's grip, yang energy ascends, and agricultural prosperity follows naturally. No historical allusion is needed when nature itself provides the lesson. From The Clinging to Duration, fire's warmth sustains the eternal partnership of thunder and wind. The transformation reveals that true constancy is not static preservation but the rhythmic renewal of fire becoming warmth, warmth releasing frozen potential, and released potential yielding abundance — a cycle that endures because it never ceases to move.
