Yilin Verse
神之在丑,逆破為咎,不利西南,人休止後。
The spirit resides in the ox direction; reversal and ruin bring blame. Unfavorable to the southwest; people rest and stay behind.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above wind, Duration's fixed course, gives way to earth above lake — Approach's expanding authority. The spirit resides in the chou position; reversals and obstructions bring blame. The southwest direction is unfavorable; people halt and linger behind. The verse invokes calendrical and directional calculations typical of Han-era divination practice. The spirit's position in chou (the ox hour, northeast) clashes with movement toward the southwest, creating a fundamental disharmony between cosmic timing and intended direction. From Duration to Approach, the steady rhythm should lead to expanding influence, as the lake's surface rises toward the earth above. But when the traveler moves against the prevailing spiritual current, persistence becomes transgression and approach meets resistance.
