Yilin Verse
出入休居,安止相憂,上室之權,虎為季殘。
Going out and coming in, resting and dwelling; anxiously guarding against worry. The power of the upper chamber; the tiger ravages the youngest.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above wind, Duration's steady household order, gives way to doubled thunder — the Arousing's terrifying shock. Dwelling in peace, coming and going at rest, yet worry stirs in the upper chambers. The tiger harms the youngest. The verse moves from domestic tranquility to sudden violence: the household seems calm until the predator strikes. 'The upper chamber's power' (上室之權) suggests a figure of authority within the household, and the tiger that devours the youngest child recalls Spring and Autumn tales of powerful ministers or consorts who destroy the rightful heir. From Duration to the Arousing, the steady hum of thunder-and-wind splits into doubled thunder — a shock that shatters the pattern. What endured as peace was concealing the predator all along.
