Yilin Verse
南山昊天,刺政關身,疾病無辜,背增為仇。
The southern mountain and the vast heaven; governance stings the very self. Illness and suffering without guilt; resentment redoubles into enmity.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder above wind, Duration's active constancy, settles into doubled mountain — Keeping Still's absolute arrest. The southern mountain rises under a vast heaven; political critique touches one's very person. Illness strikes the innocent; those who turn their backs become enemies. The phrase 'southern mountain, vast heaven' (南山昊天) echoes the Shijing ode criticizing a powerful minister — 'Lofty is the southern mountain, with rocks piled high.' Political satire brings personal danger: the one who speaks truth to power finds the power turning against him. From Duration to Keeping Still, the thunder-and-wind's movement freezes into absolute stillness. The critic who dared to persist in speaking is now pinned in place — still, ill, surrounded by those whose backs are turned. Enduring speech meets enforced silence.
