端坐生患,憂來入門,使我不安。
Sitting upright, trouble is born; worry enters through the gate — leaving me with no peace.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Heaven above the mountain develops into wind over mountain — Development, where progress proceeds gradually like a tree growing on a mountainside. Yet the verse is brief and bleak: sitting quietly, trouble arises of its own accord. Worry enters through the door unbidden, destroying one's peace. The verse inverts Development's promise of steady growth: instead of the goose advancing through measured stages, anxiety invades the supposedly safe space. From Retreat to Development, the mountain's withdrawal should yield patient, organic growth. But the verse warns that some troubles do not require one's participation — they arrive while one sits still, entering the house of retreat like an uninvited guest. Development demands engagement with the world at a proper pace; pure withdrawal, the verse suggests, merely leaves the door open for worry to walk in.
