Yilin Verse

老弱无子,不能自理,郭氏雖憂,終不離咎,管子治國,侯伯之服,乘輿八百,尊祀祖德。

Old and frail, without an heir; unable to tend to himself. Though the Guo clan grieves, in the end they cannot escape blame. Guan Zhong governs the state; lords and earls submit. Eight hundred chariots in the retinue; he honors the ancestral rites.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder above heaven yields to the union of heaven and fire in Fellowship. The verse opens with desolation — the old and weak without heirs, unable to manage affairs — then pivots sharply to Guan Zhong governing Qi. Under his stewardship, Duke Huan achieved hegemony: eight hundred war chariots assembled, ancestral virtue was honored, and the feudal lords submitted. Guan Zhong rose from poverty and near-execution to become the architect of Qi's dominance, a transformation from helplessness to supreme administrative power. From Great Power to Fellowship, fire blazes alongside heaven, classifying and unifying diverse peoples. The verse embodies this: what begins as isolated weakness becomes, through capable leadership, a gathering of allies under shared purpose.
