Yilin Verse

貞鳥鳴鳩,執一无尤。寢門治理,君子悅喜。

The faithful bird, the calling dove; steadfast, without fault. The bedchamber gate is well-governed; the gentleman is pleased and glad.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire rises above the earth, and a steadfast bird — the turtledove — calls with unwavering constancy. Holding to one principle without fault, managing the household from the bedchamber door, the gentleman finds delight and satisfaction. The turtledove in classical imagery symbolizes faithfulness: it keeps one mate and one direction, never deviating. The phrase 'holding to one' echoes the Yi's emphasis on constancy as the root of all achievement. From Progress to Fellowship, the transformation unfolds naturally: fire joined with heaven creates shared illumination. The gentleman who governs his own household with integrity radiates outward, drawing like-minded companions. Fellowship begins not in grand assembly but in the quiet discipline of the inner chamber.
