Yilin Verse
雲孽蒸起,失其道理。傷害年穀,神君之精。
Baleful vapors steam upward; the proper way is lost. The year’s grain is harmed; the spirit lord’s essence is wounded.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire rises above the earth, but ominous vapors steam upward, disrupting the natural order. The year's harvest is damaged, and the essence of the spirit lords is disturbed. 'Cloud-omens' (yun nie) in Han cosmology were atmospheric anomalies — strange cloud formations or miasmic vapors — that signaled disruptions in the cosmic balance. When these vapors 'lose their proper pattern,' the agricultural cycle suffers and the spiritual harmony between heaven and earth fractures. From Progress to Development, the transformation suggests the slow repair that must follow. Trees grow gradually upon the mountain in Development's image: patient cultivation over seasons, not dramatic intervention. After the harvest fails and the spirits are disturbed, only the steady, incremental work of restoring natural rhythms can heal the land.
