Yilin Verse

魂微惙惙,行纊聽絕。曠然大通,復更生活。

The soul fades, faint and flickering; silk floss held close, the breath seems gone. Then all at once, a great opening; life stirs and returns again.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire beneath the earth transforms into thunder and wind together — Duration, the commitment to persist through all seasons. The verse traces the trajectory from near-death to recovery: 'The soul faintly flickers, barely breathing, tested with silk floss at the lips for signs of life.' This is the ancient deathbed test — holding a strand of silk before the mouth to detect the faintest breath. 'Then suddenly, a great opening — life returns and continues.' The reversal from extremity to renewal is absolute. From Darkening of the Light to Duration, the transformation reveals that what endures is not the strong but the persistent. Thunder and wind reinforce each other ceaselessly, and the soul that barely survived the darkening of light discovers in that very fragility the thread that sustains ongoing life.
