Yilin Verse

日月之途,所行必到。无凶无咎,安寧不殆。

The path of sun and moon; where they travel, they surely arrive. No misfortune, no blame; peace and safety without peril.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire beneath the earth rises as thunder and fire together — Abundance, the fullest expression of light and power combined. 'The path of sun and moon — wherever they go, they inevitably arrive. No misfortune, no blame; peace and security without peril.' This verse closely parallels 36-3 but with a crucial difference: where the earlier verse led to Difficulty at the Beginning, this one leads to Abundance. The same cosmic certainty — the sun and moon completing their courses — here yields not struggle but fullness. From Darkening of the Light to Abundance, the buried fire meets both thunder's force and fire's illumination. The moment when the sun is highest is precisely the moment Abundance warns it must begin to wane, but the verse captures the zenith itself: absolute assurance, total arrival.
