Yilin Verse

下流難居,狂夫多罷。貞良溫柔,年歲不富。

A low station is hard to dwell in; the reckless man grows weary. The steadfast and gentle one; his years are not enriched.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire above the lake, and the low-lying ground proves hard to inhabit. In degraded quarters, reckless men exhaust themselves in futile strife, while the upright and gentle soul finds no prosperity despite years of effort. The verse contrasts two modes of failure: the coarse fail through excess, the virtuous fail through scarcity. Neither finds a footing in this disordered terrain. From Opposition to Fellowship, fire rises to meet heaven, and the gentleman distinguishes categories and discerns things. The transformation suggests that when the landscape is hostile to all, the path forward lies not in individual struggle but in finding true companions — sorting allies from adversaries with the clarity that fire in heaven provides.
