Yilin Verse
目動睫瞤,喜來加身。舉家蒙歡,吉利無殃。
The eye stirs, the eyelid flutters; joy comes upon the body. The whole household receives delight; auspicious and favorable, without harm.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
A spring beneath the mountain quickens with an involuntary sign of fortune. The eye twitches and the eyelid flutters — in Chinese folk physiognomy, a harbinger of approaching joy. Happiness descends upon the body, the whole household shares in celebration, auspicious and free of harm. The omen is entirely somatic: the body knows before the mind, signaling through a physical tremor what reason has not yet grasped. From Youthful Folly to Coming to Meet, the transformation captures the sudden, unbidden encounter. Wind stirs beneath heaven; the ruler issues proclamations to all directions. The naif does not seek good fortune — it arrives unannounced, like an unexpected meeting on the road, and joy permeates the household before anyone can explain why.
