Yilin Verse

褁糗荷糧,與利相逢。高飛有德,君大獲福。

Wrapping provisions and shouldering grain, one meets with fortune along the way. Soaring high with virtue, the lord reaps great blessings.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder over water breaks free into thunder rising from the earth — the joyous momentum of enthusiasm. Wrapping dried rations and shouldering provisions, the traveler meets good fortune on the road. Soaring high with virtue, the lord reaps great blessings. The verse captures the moment after deliverance when one packs supplies and sets out with renewed purpose, encountering prosperity along the way. From Deliverance to Enthusiasm, thunder emerges from the earth with exuberant force. The obstruction is behind; ahead lies the open road where preparation meets opportunity and heaven's favor rewards the virtuous traveler.
