Yilin Verse
嬰兒求乳,慈母歸子。黃麑悅喜,得見甘飽。
The infant seeks milk; the loving mother returns to her child. The yellow fawn, joyful and content; at last sees its fill and is sated.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Mountain above lake gives way to mountain above fire — Grace, where beauty illuminates the solid. An infant seeks its mother's milk; the loving mother returns to her child. A young fawn rejoices, finding sweetness and fullness at last. Every image radiates warmth and natural fulfillment: hunger met, mother and child reunited, the fawn at pasture. From Decrease to Grace, the lake beneath the mountain transforms into fire beneath the mountain — light glowing from within, adorning what was plain. The verse enacts Grace's principle: true beauty is the radiance of satisfied need, not ornamental excess. Decrease strips away the unnecessary, and what remains — the mother's breast, the green meadow — shines with inherent loveliness.
