Yilin Verse

西誅不服,恃強負力。倍道趍敵,師走敗覆。

Marching west to punish the defiant, relying on strength and force. Doubling the pace to meet the enemy, the army flees in utter defeat.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind and thunder bestow increase, but the transformation leads to heaven joining with fire — the broad fellowship of Gathering with Kindred. A western expedition punishes the insubordinate, relying on overwhelming strength. The army doubles its marches to rush at the enemy, but the troops are routed and the campaign collapses. Forced marches exhaust soldiers before battle is even joined — a classic error documented throughout the Zuo Zhuan and military treatises. Reliance on brute force without strategic coordination invites disaster. From Increase to Fellowship, the verse delivers a sharp lesson: true fellowship requires shared purpose, not mere aggregation of power. Heaven and fire move in the same direction only when aligned by principle. An army that rushes headlong, trusting raw strength alone, finds that its fellowship dissolves at the first real test.
