Yilin Verse

甲乙丙丁,俱位我庭。三丑六子,入門見母。

Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding — all take their places in our courtyard. Three daughters-in-law and six sons enter the gate to greet their mother.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to fire at the mountain's base — the adornment of Grace. Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding — the first four Heavenly Stems — all take their positions in the courtyard. Three 'ugly' and six children enter through the gate to see their mother. The Heavenly Stems arranged in the courtyard suggest cosmic order made visible in domestic space: everything in its proper station, each element adorned and aligned. The children gathering before their mother is the image of a well-ordered household where hierarchy and affection coexist. From Increase to Grace, the transformation reveals how abundance finds its most beautiful expression in harmonious arrangement. Fire beneath the mountain illuminates without consuming; increase channeled through proper form becomes lasting elegance.
