Yilin Verse

躄屈復伸,本乘浮雲,貴寵毋前。

The crippled one bends, then stretches again; rising at last to ride the drifting clouds. Honor and favor lie no further ahead.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven bends low and then springs back. The crippled leg straightens and extends again; what was earthbound now rides the floating clouds. Yet the verse counsels restraint: 'Do not press your favor forward.' One who has been bent by misfortune and now soars must remember that the clouds are borrowed, not owned. From Coming to Meet to Enthusiasm, thunder erupts from the earth in exuberant release — the energy that was compressed now bursts forth. But Gou's warning persists: the yin line's encounter with power is intoxicating, and enthusiasm unchecked by prudence becomes recklessness. Rise, but do not overreach.
